The State Fair

In the 50's the way to customize a car was to make it look more modern. More futuristic. The newest technology of the day was Metalflake.  Fiberglass and custom lights were the way to go. Now when we use these flashy brilliant coatings and colors it's in reverence to that golden era. We can relive it to a degree but outside of select car shows it's not what it was. Lucky for us there is one place that the esthetic has remained the same. The carnival. The fonts, the graphics, the lights and the gel coat metal flake. It's everywhere. The best time capsule ever.

In 1930 Ford realized it was missing the boat. Mercury didn't exist yet and Lincoln was 10 years out. Ford had been making cars for the common man, but had nothing if you had a couple extra bucks and wanted to cruise in a little more style. Fords answer was the Victoria. Not to be confused with the later Crown Victoria, the Victoria was a slightly restyled and upgraded version of a base model Ford. The early ones make bad ass hot rods. These two do it for me.

Buddy Holly's Ariel

For those who don't know the story. In 1958, flush with cash, Buddy Holly and the crickets walked into a Harley dealership with no ride home. Their appearance and attitude prompted the owner to escort the boys to the door, believing they were wasting his time. They headed across town and ended up at the local Triumph dealer. The Crickets left with a couple of Triumphs and Buddy left with a Ariel Cyclone. They paid cash.
The way the story goes, the trio hit the local JcPenny, geared up with leather jackets, boots, and levis, and hit the road. They road the 300 miles back to Lubbock through sun and rain. The boys would put countless miles on their bikes that summer never knowing that in less than a year Buddy would be dead.
Buddy's Ariel would change hands for years until the remaining Crickets worked a deal to get it back. They would then present it to Waylon Jennings as a birthday gift.
